Builders and their clients often are faced with a wide range of options related to the quality and durability of the structures that we create. In general, our feeling is that if we are using the earth's resources—timber, stone, steel and so on—that we should do everything in our capacity to enable the structures we build to last and remain in good condition for as long as possible. We encourage our clients to think likewise, and will recommend choices of materials and installation techniques which will stand the test of time and endure for many generations into the future.
We also are happy to explain to our clients some of the techniques that we use, such as priming and painting the backs of exterior trim boards before installing them, using solid wood for interior and exterior trim rather than finger-jointed boards, installing formaldehyde-free oriented strand board rather than the less expensive particle board which is commonly installed by other builders as sheathing (and disintegrates rapidly), and installing framing members with a high degree of accuracy and precision which will reduce the tendency of buildings to settle and move over time.
