The ecological challenges facing human society today are serious and demand urgent attention. At the same time, we believe that solutions to environmental problems are attainable and that humanity is capable of creating a culture of peace and sustainability. Changing our own personal consumption habits can go a long way toward creating a sustainable world. The choices we make in the design and materials of a construction project have a significant impact on the natural environment through factors such as energy use, water use, impact on natural habitats, and contributions to the waste stream.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization of which Pollard Builders is a member, the built environment accounts for 36 percent of the energy consumed and 30 percent of the raw materials used in America, while construction waste and demolition debris amount to 30 percent of all of the waste produced. It could be argued that no single aspect of human society has more impact on natural systems than the built environment in which we live. We are happy to discuss the choices available to customers that reduce the environmental impact of their construction projects.

Passive solar design, solar hot water systems, super-insulated walls, and energy efficient windows are just a few of the many options available to create a sustainable new home or upgrade the efficiency of an existing residence. Along with our partners in the field, we can provide expert advice on energy auditing of existing buildings, energy modeling for new homes and renovations, and renewable energy systems. In addition to helping the environment through the structures we create, we also promote ecological construction in Maine through our active involvement in the Maine Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.
