Benjamin Pollard has been committed to spending his life making the world a better place since he was five years old, when he figured out that the world needed quite a bit of help. After graduating from Stanford with a bachelor's degree in international relations and an environmental policy focus, Pollard went to work as a reporter at the Weekly Packet in his hometown of Blue Hill and then as the news editor of the nearby Castine Patriot, planning to later write articles and books about the environmental issues facing the world. He then helped promote conservation of the Maine Woods at The Wilderness Society's northeast regional office in Boston, during which time he decided that he would like to return to Maine to found an environmental education organization here.
In order to prepare himself for running his own organization, Pollard then entered a master's degree program in environmental management at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. During the course of his studies, he decided that he would rather found a for-profit business venture that helped protect the environment through market forces rather than start a nonprofit organization which would depend on outside funding sources. A successful business, Pollard reasoned, would not only be independent, but could also donate profits to worthy organizations.
After receiving his master's degree, Pollard returned to Maine in June of 2005, at which time he founded Pollard Builders, first working as an independent carpenter for other construction companies and then quickly completing increasingly complex projects as the manager of his own projects. After nearly six years in business, Pollard is happy to have built a thriving company in a challenging economic environment, and is looking forward to many years of growth ahead.
Pollard is an avid sailor and loves to race his Etchells sailboat, Andromeda, whenever he can. He is a competitive swimmer with the Maine Masters Swim Club and swims in meets on some weekends when Andromeda is not in the water. Pollard is also a baritone chorister and active member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke (Episcopal) on State Street in Portland. He particularly enjoys singing the Pollard Builders company hymn, Jerusalem, which can be heard here performed by Charlotte Church, and can sometimes be heard singing his favorite songs while building cabinets or installing trim.
